The future of alternative energy is now. Our electric bill this past year was shocking. I called the utility company and they informed me that there was a rate hike. We realized that we have to do something about this over the coming months and year. Lancaster City Council Adopts Ordinance Encouraging Increased Use of Alternative Energy Posted Date: 2/1/2010 11:00 AM
During its Jan. 26th meeting, the Lancaster City Council adopted an ordinance to stimulate increased use of alternative energy systems within the City. Specifically, the new ordinance permits the construction of small wind energy systems in commercial and industrial zones. It also allows solar power plants in rural residential zones with a conditional use permit.
“Our goal of making Lancaster the alternative energy capital of the world may sound like mere hyperbole, but we are continually drawing closer to making this goal a reality,” said Mayor R. Rex Parris. “This ordinance is yet another step in the right direction. The use of alternative energy conserves not only our environment and resources, but also saves money in the long-term, in addition to building a brighter future for our children and grandchildren.” Read More
Car Makers Going Solar
Car companies may be jumping on the band wagon to sell solar panels and home charging units to power not just customers’ cars, but also their homes. You, however, don’t have to wait to buy a solar system for your home until you have an electric car.

Nissan Dealers Seen as One-Stop EV Shop

SANTA MONICA, CA – Buyers of the upcoming Nissan Leaf electric vehicle may be seeing their dealers more often than they anticipate if plans being kicked around by the auto maker come to fruition.
As it prepares to begin leasing and selling its small Leaf EV late next year, Nissan North America Inc. sees dealerships as a one-stop shop for customers’ needs.

Dealers may be asked to offer a variety of lithium-ion car batteries to suit an individual’s driving requirements, sell solar panels for the customer’s house and recommend an electric company to install a home-charging unit, Mark Perry, director-product planning, says during a media event here.
Solar Plant Instead Of Palmdale Airport?
More and more solar projects are coming to town. One area that is being considered for a solar energy plant is the undeveloped land adjacent to the Pamdale Airport. Los Angeles, like other municipalities, is looking to take advantage of solar energy to power buildings, city lights and more.
With the incentives given by the federal and state governments as well as the utility companies, it is a no brainer that installing a solar system for ones home is the way to go – if not now, then sometime in the near future. Aside from the credits being given to homeowners, there are loans available from $25,000 – $37,000 that require no equity or appraisal. LOS ANGELES – “For four decades, the city of Los Angeles has sat on property that it took from private property owners through eminent domain with the explicit promise to develop an airport,” said Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich, whose district includes the Santa Clarita Valley. “Now they are attempting to use it for an energy plant to serve the city of Los Angeles.”…
…on Nov. 16, 2009, the Los Angeles Airport Commission voted to award a three-year, $700,000 contract to secure a developer to build a solar energy plant on the 17,500 acres of vacant Los Angeles city-owned land.

The field of mirrors at the Sierra SunTower solar power plant, in California’s Antelope Valley, reflects Barack Obama’s vision of a fundamental change in the US energy supply. Photo / eSolarIt looks like an epic art installation: 24,000 heliostats arranged in precise rows across the desert floor in the Antelope Valley outside Lancaster, north of Los Angeles.
The heliostats – mirrors that follow the sun’s arc across the Mojave Desert sky – sit on the Sierra SunTower site, a demonstration plant built by eSolar, one of a legion of Southern California renewable energy start-ups that are remaking the United States energy industry.
The Pasadena-based company pledges to make solar electricity “for less than the price of coal, without subsidies … and truly change the world”.
